ABSTRACT
The proposed Eldoret National Polytechnic hostel will act as an accommodation for
students within the Eldoret National Polytechnic and other students studying in the
town campus. The hostel will contain lounges for visitors within the institution in
the upper floor, entertainment hall on the ground and a swimming pool on the rear
front of the structure. Student’s rooms will majorly be on both floors. Each room is
designed to have a washroom and a ward drop inside. Due to rapid growth of the
institution in the recent years and insecurity in the outer community surrounding
school, I propose this project to curb the congestion in the existing hostels and
assure the students of their safety.
The proposed project take account the social economic and environmental aspects in
order to achieve maximum impact and attract not only students but also visitors to
lounge the various rooms. The project will commence with taking levels before
excavations of the top soil for foundation laying. Soil bearing capacity will be determined
before construction. Excavation of foundation and column bases, levelling and blinding
of the foundation followed by reinforcement according to the design. Stones will be
used in both main walls and partitioning walls. Steel doors to be used in the main entrances
and doors made of timber to be used in the inner rooms. Large windows to be used in both
the ground floor and upper floor to provide maximum lighting and maximum fresh air.
Steel frames to be used in roofing as it is relatively cheap and will last for long compared
to timber. Corrugated iron sheets to be used to enclose the structure.
The main objectives of the proposed project are;
- To reduce congestion in the existing hostels
- Provide accommodation for newly enrolled students
- Provide accommodation for visitors
- Give students and visitors a place for recreational activities
